Program Description
Certificate in Translating Courses at UNC CharlotteÌýThe CT is not equivalent to a major in a foreignÌýlanguage; rather it represents a theory-based skillÌýdeveloped at the bachelor’s degree level. The CT isÌýideal for majors in French, German and/or SpanishÌýwho wish to add another dimension and UNC CharlotteÌýcredential to their study and mastery of one or moreÌýof these languages.
Introduction to Translation Studies
History, theory, pragmatics and procedures of theÌýfield of translation.Ìý Introduction to textÌýtypology, terminology, and issues such as register,Ìýaudience, editing, andÌý computer-assistedÌýtranslating.
Practicum in Translating I
Comparative stylistics, restructuring texts,Ìýediting, troubleshooting, and techniques of theÌýtranslator in working with a variety of text types. ÌýConducted in English and French or English andÌýGerman, according to the language pair.
Practicum in Translating I
Comparative stylistics, restructuring texts,Ìýediting, troubleshooting, and techniques of theÌýtranslator in working with a variety ofÌý text typesÌý(e.g., business, legal, medical, technical, etc.).ÌýContinues with history, theory and trends inÌýtranslation.Ìý Conducted in English and Spanish.
Practicum in Translation II
Critical analysis of different kinds of texts;Ìýtranslating for specific audiences; problems ofÌýterminology; development of working dictionaries inÌýfield(s) of specialization.Ìý Conducted in EnglishÌýand French or English and German, according to theÌýlanguage pair.
Practicum in Translating II
Further work in restructuring texts, editing,Ìýtroubleshooting, translation of a variety ofÌýliterary and cultural text types (e.g., fiction,Ìýpoetry, drama, essay, film). Continues with history,Ìýtheory and trends in translation.Ìý Conducted inÌýEnglish and Spanish.ÌýMay count as course work forÌýthe Spanish major or minor.
Practicum in Translating III
Study of professional journals,Ìý technologies,Ìýprotocol and resources in the field (e.g., ATA,ÌýALTA). Advanced issues of translation.Ìý TranslationÌýof a semester-long project in individualÌýconsultation.Ìý Conducted in English and French orÌýEnglish and German, according to the language pair.
Practicum in Translating III
Vocational, pre-professionalizing activities.Ìý StudyÌýof professional journals, technologies, protocol andÌýresources in the field (e.g., ATA, ALTA), jobhuntingskills and information on accreditation. ÌýTranslation of a semester-long project in individualÌýconsultation. Conducted in English and Spanish.
